During an aesthetic consultation, patients have asked me, “Can you put some Botox here?” as they point to their nasolabial folds. I then explain that Botox or neuromodulators are usually treated from the eyes to the top of the head, and fillers are utilized from the cheeks to the lower face. Next, I share the unique properties of both treatments, explain their differences, and how each may contribute to their #aestheticgoals.
Botox or neuromodulators relax dynamic or expression wrinkles between
· Brows (glabella complex)
· Forehead
· Crow’s feet
It is a minimally invasive treatment with tiny needles in which the medication is injected into the muscles. Within two weeks, the muscles relax, and the wrinkles are diminished or eliminated for the next 90 days. It is recommended that the procedure is repeated every 3-4 months. The dosage is in units, and the treatment cost is calculated based on the number of units prescribed for the patient. The recommended dosage for Botox in the forehead, between the brows, and crow’s feet is 64 units per package insert. However, the dosage for each patient will vary depending on their age and skincare goals. Botox can be injected into the lower face, though it will not be the treatment to improve excess skin around the mouth, chin, or jawline area.
The other treatment option is dermal fillers, a minimally invasive treatment to help correct volume loss due to normal aging. These areas include the
· Cheeks
· Temples
· Chin
· Nasolabial folds
· Lips
· Jawline
The dosage is in one-milliliter to one-point five-milliliter syringes, and multiple syringes may be utilized during the treatment. The cost is based on the number of syringes. The dermal filler results can be seen immediately post-procedure, though the complete results may take up to 14 days for complete healing. Depending on the product, the fillers may last 9-12 months. The word filler will help do just that: fill an area. It is not likely to lift sagging jowls or jawlines as one may hope.
The best way to know which product to use to achieve your aesthetic goals is to schedule a complimentary consultation with an experienced nurse injector who can listen to your concerns and help guide you on the best treatment plan based on your age, health, and skincare goals. It may take more than one treatment session over a few months to achieve the goal of smoother skin and fewer wrinkles. The optimal results are usually in combination with Botox, dermal fillers, medical-grade skincare, and laser or radiofrequency devices.
